All Things Science

On Saturday the 26th was Smithsonian Day, where numerous museums were free to get in. We took advantage of this opportunity to visit our local science museum. You can visit the site by clicking here. We learned about hot air balloons and air pressure, how electricity can be triggered by magnets, how dams are formed, how men walk in space, how illusions work, how art and science can become one, the speed on a slide, how sound and air travel. Well as you can see we learned a great deal and cannot wait to go back. Thank you to Science Central for participating in Smithsonian Day 2009.

Our Zoo Day

One of the things I must admit I love about home schooling is the freedom to teach the way I want to. This Friday we decided to take advantage of the lingering nice weather and head to the zoo. Our local zoo is The Ft.Wayne Childrens Zoo. I printed off some observation worksheets for the kids and off we went. They loved every moment of it.
I had each child choose an animal to observe and they will do a small report on their animal in the coming weeks. Jeremiah chose the Komodo Dragon and Briana the Orangutan. We spent many hours reading about each animal and studying the behaviors, feedings, mating and responses of each.
We are looking forward to our next visit.

9-11 Lest We Never Forget

Today we have taken some time out of our studies to remember those who have fallen victim on September 11, 2001. As part of our tribute, we adopted a soldier who is currently in Iraq serving our country. We went shopping for all of his wish list items yesterday, The kids had a blast finding all the items their soldier asked for. Today we boxed everything up and wrote letters and drew pictures and sent it out.

Organization Underway

Today my oldest daughter (8) and I made our menu for the next month and our shopping list to go along with it. We grocery shop for a month at a time and I am trying to be more frugal when it comes to our shopping. This was a great lesson for her in organization since she is worse than me. She also likes knowing that she had an input in what meals we will have.

My children listened intently as President Obama spoke. The speech was excellent and kept my children's attention for the whole twenty minutes. I have given them a follow up assignment after our discussion to come up with five goals for this school year. Tomorrow we will put them onto poster board and hang them in our classroom as reminders. I am curious myself why us home schooling parents seemed to be left out of the "teacher" speech, but that will be another asignment for a later date.

Four Weeks into Home Schooling

As I sit here and type this it is 11:45am. My children have already done their morning work and doing free play. One is playing play-doh the other legos. The babies are down for naps and we are getting ready to tune into the ever controversial Obama speech. I have been pondering my decision to home school my children and if I am doing enough for them and thier future. We have been utilizing an awesome program called Time4learning, that has really helped to keep my children focused on the work end of schooling.
